Details of Stainless steel honey spade

Honey spade by Bienen-Ruck (article 33010), one piece of stainless steel about 50 cm long, with a rounded blade of about 13 × 11.5 cm. For cutting and lifting crystallised honey out of buckets and drums, and for moving cappings and wax. Weighs half a kilo.

Crystallised honey does not come out of a drum with a spatula: it takes a wide blade and a handle that reaches the bottom without your hand going in, and that stands up to levering.

01 · WHAT FOR

Crystallised honey, cappings and wax

At 50 cm it reaches the bottom of a 25-30 kilo bucket and of a medium drum; the rounded blade cuts granulated honey into portions and lifts them without the block breaking into unmanageable lumps. It also moves cappings on the uncapper or bench, and lifts wax out of the tray, where a spatula falls short. One review bought it for exactly that: getting cappings out.

02 · HOW TO USE IT

From the edges to the centre, without leaning on the drum

Work from the walls towards the centre, cutting slices and lifting them; lever against the honey itself, never against the rim, the gate or a weld of the tank, which deform before the spade does. With very hard honey, warming the container a few hours at 35-40 °C saves effort and does not harm the honey.

03 · THE MATERIAL

All stainless, no handle to rot

It is one piece of stainless steel, with no wooden or plastic handle: wash with hot water and neutral detergent, rinse and dry, and it holds no honey in joints. Before changing batch, check that edges and blade have no marks where product could stay.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

One spade is supplied; the foam scraper and the double-sieve strainer come separately.
