Combining timber, plastic and galvanised steel in the same Langstroth hive is a deliberate choice, not a compromise. Each material goes where it performs best: pine timber on the brood box for thermal insulation, high-density plastic on the floor for cleaning and weight reduction, and galvanised steel on the lid for weather resistance. The result is a hive built for beekeepers managing between 30 and 300 colonies who want to cut down on maintenance without giving up the warmth of timber where it really matters: at the brood nest.
Pine timber brood box
Standard 10-frame Langstroth body in pine with dovetail joints. Timber acts as a natural insulator and keeps the brood box temperature stable between summer and the brood-rearing months — something plastic alone cannot achieve. The side notches double as handgrips for lifting the hive without added cleats or fittings. Supplied with 10 wired Hoffman Langstroth frames, with automatic spacing between frames for faster brood inspections and fewer crushed bees.
Ventilated plastic floor with sliding entrance
This is where the Hybrid® changes the game. The high-density plastic floor will not rot, splinter or warp and rinses clean with a hose in seconds. It includes a ventilated mesh underside that helps regulate humidity inside the hive and supports varroa monitoring with a slide-in tray. The sliding entrance reducer lets you adjust the opening to suit the season: wide open during a flow, narrowed in winter so the colony can defend itself more easily. It weighs around 1 to 2 kg less than a timber sanitary floor — a difference you notice when loading 50 hives onto a lorry for migratory beekeeping.
Galvanised steel-clad lid
Outer lid clad in galvanised steel: it reflects solar radiation, holds up against rain and hail without rotting, and copes with the routine knocks of fieldwork. No annual repainting needed. It seats firmly on the brood box with no play thanks to the steel folded over the timber edge.
What this hive does NOT include
This Hybrid® is a complete brood box. It does not include a super or super frames (buy separately to match your harvest setup), it does not include wax foundation for the frames, and it does not include a bee suit, smoker or hive tool. If you are setting up your first apiary, look at our starter kits; if you are already kitted out, this is a solid base for expansion.
Where this hive earns its keep
Beekeepers who move colonies for migratory pollination or main flows and value every kilo saved. Anyone wanting to cut down on annual floor maintenance (scraping, repainting with linseed oil). Beekeepers running nucs and splits who prefer a floor they can pressure-wash between seasons. And for those starting on the Langstroth system who want a modern hive without giving up a timber body.
