How much sugar does a colony need?

A bee colony can consume between 5 and 15 kg of sugar per season, depending on the climate zone, colony strength and the type of feeding applied. In areas with long winters or scarce nectar flows, consumption sits at the higher end of the range. An 800 kg pallet covers the feeding needs of approximately 50 to 160 hives, making it the most cost-effective option for medium and large operations.

Syrup preparation: key ratios

Granulated sugar is used to prepare syrup in two concentrations according to the time of year. For stimulative feeding in spring, a thin 1:1 syrup is prepared (1 kg sugar to 1 litre warm water), administered in small frequent doses to simulate a nectar flow and encourage the queen to lay. For maintenance feeding in autumn, a thick 2:1 syrup is prepared (2 kg sugar to 1 litre water), in large spaced doses, so the bees store reserves quickly before winter.

Storage

Sugar must be stored in a dry, cool location elevated from the floor to prevent moisture absorption and clumping. Keeping bags on wooden pallets or shelving avoids direct contact with cold surfaces that may cause condensation. Proper storage ensures the sugar dissolves cleanly and retains its properties for months.

Logistics: full pallet shipment

This product ships as a full 800 kg pallet via freight transport. Truck access at the delivery point is essential. If your location has access restrictions (narrow streets, no loading dock), please contact us before ordering to coordinate delivery. The carrier will offload the pallet at the tailgate; subsequent handling is the responsibility of the recipient.

The full pallet is aimed at professional beekeepers, cooperatives and operations with more than 50 hives that need to secure their sugar supply for the entire campaign. The price per kilogram in pallet format is significantly lower than for individual bags, and having all stock available from the start of the season allows you to plan feedings without depending on distributor availability.
