01 · WHAT IT IS AND WHEN TO GIVE IT

Dense, ready syrup with nothing to prepare

It is an inverted, stabilised sugar syrup at 66 °Brix, appreciably denser than a home-made 1:1. That matters for a practical reason: the more water a syrup carries, the more the colony has to evaporate before storing it, and the bees pay for that work. Its natural place is the moments when energy is needed now — a newly hived swarm that is not yet foraging, an autumn top-up to complete stores, a spring start when the field is not yet giving. And coming in a single bag, you take exactly what you need to the apiary: one bag per hive, no buckets, no drums.

02 · HOW TO OPEN IT

Small cuts on top: that is what stops them drowning

This is where it is all decided, and where most people get it wrong the first time. Lay the bag closed and flat on the frame top bars, and once it is in place make several small cuts or punctures on the upper face — two or three slits a couple of centimetres long is enough. The bees suck through those slits and the syrup only comes out as fast as they take it: no open sheet of liquid ever forms, so there is nowhere to drown. Opening the bag wide is the mistake: it spills over the frames, the colony gets daubed and yes, they drown. If you have cut too far, turn the bag over and start again on the other face.

03 · WHAT IS IN IT

40 fructose, 30 dextrose, 30 sucrose

The declared composition is 40 ± 2 % fructose, 30 ± 2 % dextrose and 30 ± 2 % sucrose. That balance has a consequence you notice in the apiary: the high fructose share delays crystallisation, so the bag takes the cold without turning into a block, which is what ruins a syrup put on in October. The manufacturer also declares it free of polysaccharides and HMF, and enriched with vitamins and amino acids. The 66 °Brix give it a viscosity that flows through the cuts without dumping.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is a single 1 kg bag: if you are feeding several hives, count one per hive per feed. And the rule that has nothing to do with the product: do not feed during a commercial flow or with supers on for harvest, because the syrup ends up stored and alters the honey. Keep the bags closed, dry and out of the sun; the plastic is thin and punctures easily, so do not stack anything on them in the boot.
