Manual roller with plastic spikes for opening cappings before extraction. The spikes pierce many cells on each pass without removing a continuous sheet of wax, making it useful on uneven combs and dense or thixotropic honeys, including some heather honeys, that do not flow readily after a shallow cut.
Support the frame on a stable uncapping bench and make several overlapping passes, varying the angle slightly. Apply just enough pressure to pierce the capping without crushing the comb. Hold the frame up to the light and check low or unopened areas before placing it in the extractor.
Pricking can leave small particles in the honey. Arrange suitable coarse straining or physical filtration after extraction and clean the roller before wax dries between the spikes. If a spike is bent or broken, withdraw the tool from use to prevent fragments entering the product.
