01 · WHY THE STARTING WAX MATTERS

Wax keeps what is fat-soluble, and does not let go

Wax is lipophilic: whatever enters the hive and is fat-soluble ends up accumulating in it. Synthetic acaricides are the clear case, which is why traces still turn up of molecules abandoned years ago. Standard processing does not remove them: melting and embossing redistributes the wax, it does not clean it. When you melt your old combs and send them off to be processed, what comes back contains what was already there.

02 · WHAT THE REPORT CARRIES

Five acaricides, one laboratory and a document you can show

Every batch is analysed at QSI (Quality Services International), one of the European reference laboratories for apicultural residues, and the report comes with the block. The five acaricides that matter are tested: amitraz, coumaphos, fluvalinate, tau-fluvalinate and bromopropylate. The figures are those of the batch supplied, so the paperwork is not decoration: it is the document you answer a demanding customer or an inspection with.

03 · WHO IT IS FOR

Making your own foundation, renewing brood comb, or cosmetics

It makes sense if you make your own foundation or have it processed and want new wax into the circuit rather than recycling your own. Also for renewing brood comb in batches, or setting up mating nuclei on a base whose origin you know. And in apicultural cosmetics — balms, ointments, creams — the report is what lets you evidence the raw material to whoever asks.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is wax in block form, not sheets: it has to be melted and embossed, at home or by a processor. And if you are renewing wax, bear in mind the obvious: putting a clean block into a brood box where the old combs remain dilutes, it does not solve. Renewal goes in batches, taking the old out.
