Details of Candle Mould – Bear and Barrel

Mould of the bear with the hive: a 11.5 cm figure that takes about 130 grams of wax.

Seven candles to the kilo: this is a substantial piece. At 130 grams a unit, a kilo of wax gives seven or eight bears. It is not a long-run figure: it is one of those sold singly and put at the front of the counter.

01 · 130 GRAMS, SEVEN CANDLES A KILO

And a 3 × 8 wick for a figure with volume

The mould is 11.5 cm tall and the maker specifies a 3 × 8 wick, the one that matches a compact figure with body. The wax reaches the detail of the fur and the relief of the hive if it is poured at the right point.

The inner surface is smooth, so after every use it cleans without wax clinging in the recesses. It is a mould for many batches.

02 · 70-75 °C AND COOL WITHOUT MOVING

The two moves that decide the finish

The maker's sheet asked for a pour at about 65 °C, and there beeswax has only just melted — it melts at 62-65 — and arrives too thick for the fur. The working point is 70-75 °C, below the 85 at which wax darkens.

And the second: once filled, the mould is not touched. Moving it while it sets leaves marks and lines on the surface that never come off. Unmould with the piece completely cold.
