This is the pump for short transfers, and it is worth buying it knowing that. It moves clean, warm honey from one tank to another: it will not lift three metres, it will not take cappings, and it is not built for continuous work.
01 · WHAT YOU NEED TO START
It is the most repeated question and the answer is short: besides the pump you need food-grade hose of 40 mm inside diameter, the coupling for the far end and hose clamps. Nothing else.
The 40 mm is not a loose figure: it is the same calibre (DN 40, 1½") as the taps on most settling tanks, so the circuit closes without adapters.
And one condition that does not forgive: the suction side has to be airtight. With the smallest air leak past a gasket or a badly tightened coupling, this pump will not prime.
02 · NEVER RUN IT DRY
The impeller is flexible elastomer, and what cools and lubricates it is the product itself. A few seconds spinning empty is enough to burn its vanes, and that is the number one reason these pumps die.
In practice: do not start it with the hose in the air, and stop it the moment the tank starts drawing air. The impeller is a wear part: it is replaced, not repaired.
03 · HONEY, WARM
With the honey around 30 °C it flows and the pump works without straining. Going higher is not free: above about 40 °C honey starts paying for it in HMF, which is a legal parameter, and in aroma.
With dense honeys — heather, holm oak, chestnut — the output drops and the pump suffers. The answer is to warm the tank, not to ask more of the pump. And it is not for lifting more than two or three metres, nor for honey with wax or cappings in it.
04 · AFTER USING IT
The honey left inside crystallises and seizes the impeller, so the rinse is not tomorrow: it is when you finish. Warm water, run it a few seconds and drain.
Before first use, the same. These pumps leave the factory greased and tested with a little food syrup: an initial rinse takes out the lubricant and the test residue.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It is a well-judged entry-level pump, as long as you buy it for what it does.
