01 · WHY IT HAS TO BE Ø 900

The frame sits like a spoke of the wheel

In a radial the frames point at the centre, so the length of the frame has to fit inside the radius of the drum. A Langstroth frame is 42 cm long: that is why a radial that really takes them does not go below 90 cm across. It is not size for the sake of it, it is geometry.

Per load it takes 42 Langstroth frames, 24 Dadant Blatt or US brood frames, or 42 Dadant half-super frames. The basket is stainless steel rod of Ø 8 and Ø 6 mm, which is what keeps it from opening up under heavy use.

02 · THE MOTOR IS UNDERNEATH

A low centre of gravity and less dancing on long cycles

The 150 W motor is mounted at the bottom, not on the lid. That lowers the centre of gravity of a 900 mm drum and, together with the reinforced frame, is what keeps the machine still when the frames do not all weigh the same, which is always.

It runs on a 230 V supply with a 12 V motor, and the drum base is conical: the honey runs down to the 6/4 inch stainless tap on its own, which is the size of the house honey line.

03 · ELEVEN PROGRAMS AND ONE STOP

The HE-01V controller and the cut-out on opening

The HE-01V has two manual modes and nine preset automatic cycles, chosen according to the honey and the state of the frames: new, freshly built wax does not take the same treatment as an old, well capped comb.

And it has the detail that really matters on a drum this size: lift the lid and the extractor stops by itself. The lid is 4 mm clear methacrylate, so you follow the cycle without opening anything.

04 · IT ARRIVES FLAT-PACKED

Assembled without special tools, and that gets through doors

It is delivered in a box for assembly, with the legs in two pieces and no special tools needed. An assembled 900 mm drum does not go through every opening: arriving dismantled, the problem is solved in the honey house and not in the corridor.

It is also what lets you store it out of season or move it between buildings without taking half the installation apart. The legs are electrostatically painted and removable.
