01 · THE UNIVERSAL CAGE

Three frames of any format

The cage takes Langstroth, Dadant, Layens and the other common formats, which is what makes it useful to anyone running more than one type of hive. In shallow frames it holds 6.

It is made of welded stainless rod with a 25 × 70 mm mesh: close enough to hold the comb without marking it while it spins.

02 · BY HAND, AND THAT PROTECTS

It starts slowly because you decide

In a tangential extractor the face towards the drum wall empties first, so you stop, turn the frames and repeat. It is slower, and in exchange it gives a control a motor does not.

Because what wrecks a comb is starting suddenly, and with a crank that does not happen: the speed rises at whatever rate the frame can take. The brake on the drive finishes the idea — you stop when you want, instead of waiting for it to wind down.

03 · THE MATERIALS

304 stainless, Plexiglas and epoxy

The body is entirely AISI 304 stainless steel (0H18N9), resistant to the acids in honey and with no transfer of smell or taste. The lid is Plexiglas, so you watch the load spin without opening.

Legs and crossbar are finished in epoxy paint. That is the part that shows wear first in a honey house, and it is worth checking now and then.

04 · THE TAP

6/4" is 1 ½", and that is 40 mm

The tap is plastic, 6/4", and that size travels under three names worth knowing: 6/4" = 1 ½" = DN40 = 40 mm.

It is the standard honey-house bore — the same as the settling tank, the transfer pump and the food-grade hose — so it links up with what you already own without hunting for odd adapters.

It is manual and takes 3 frames: the question is not whether it extracts well, but how many frames a year will go through it.
