Recover pure wax using solar energy — professional build, real capacity and zero running costs
If you recycle wax seriously, you need a melter that holds up season after season and has enough room to load cappings and comb without drip-feeding it. This SAF solar wax melter is built entirely from 0.8 mm stainless steel, with a perforated insert measuring 60 × 60 cm — large enough to take ~10 Dadant or ~15 Langstroth frames without cutting them up — and a basket capacity of ~60–68 kg. The 10 mm twin-wall polycarbonate lid concentrates solar radiation and speeds up melting, while the adjustable-height legs let you set the optimum angle throughout the year. Complete kit, ready to assemble and start melting.
The lid isn't a simple sheet of glass or clear plastic — it's a 10 mm twin-wall polycarbonate panel, the same material used in professional greenhouses. Its cellular structure traps heat far more effectively than a single layer: it creates a stronger greenhouse effect inside the box and reaches melting temperatures with fewer hours of sun. On sunny spring and summer days, wax starts flowing within hours. The lid includes grab handles so you can open and close it without burning yourself.
The perforated insert measures 600 × 600 mm — with an approximate capacity of 10 Dadant or 15 Langstroth frames, laid directly on the tray without cutting anything up. It also fits National and Commercial frames. Wax melts on the angled insert and drains through the perforations, which trap solid debris (cocoons, comb remains, propolis), while clean wax flows down to the collection tray below without touching the frame at any point. That means pure wax blocks and frames ready to re-sheet with foundation.
The 4 steel legs with screw fixings adjust the working height between 82 and 88 cm, but their main purpose is something else: you can adjust the melter's tilt to optimise the angle of solar incidence by season. Steeper in summer (high sun), shallower in spring and autumn (low sun). This adjustment makes a real difference to melting speed. Working at table height also means no bending to load and unload — a detail you'll appreciate when processing several batches in a row.
The body, insert and collection tray are all 0.8 mm stainless steel — rigid enough to support the weight of loaded frames and resistant to the organic acids in wax and propolis without corroding. Unlike melters with plastic basins, there's no risk of heat deformation or UV degradation over the years. Clean with hot water and a soft scourer, and it's ready for the next load. This is a piece of kit built to stay in your apiary for many seasons.
