01 · NEVER DRY

It works flooded or it does not work

A progressive cavity pump needs to work flooded: with product on the suction side from the first moment. The rotor turns inside an elastomer stator, and it is the product itself that lubricates that contact.

With no honey inside, friction burns the stator in a matter of seconds. That is not wear: it is an immediate failure, and it is the most common reason this kind of pump gets replaced.

02 · WHY HELICAL FOR HONEY

It moves without beating

The system is called helical — or 'pigtail' — for the twisted shaft that turns inside the stator. That turning forms sealed cavities that carry the product from one end to the other without agitating it.

That is what a honey pump is asked for: not to work air in, not to break the crystal if the honey is creamed, and not to heat it by shear. It moves around 450 kg/h, which with honey's density is a little over 300 litres an hour.

03 · DIN 40 IN AND OUT

The calibre of the house line

The fittings are food-grade DIN 40 at both ends, and it takes 40 mm hose. That is 1½”: the same calibre as the taps, valves and fittings in the rest of the workshop.

The trolley is AISI 304 stainless on wheels, and the control panel sits on the handle, within reach. It stands 68 cm tall by 90 long and 38 wide.

04 · IT RUNS BOTH WAYS

And that clears a blockage

The direction of rotation is reversible. Besides letting you draw from either side, it does something nobody mentions: when something blocks the line, you reverse for a moment and back it out instead of forcing it.

The geared motor is 0.75 kW at 1,370 rpm with a 1:5 reduction, so the pump turns slowly — which is exactly what a viscous product wants.

05 · RINSE IT AND OIL IT

Hot water at the end, oil afterwards

Maintenance is two gestures. First, circulate hot water when the work is done, to rinse the internals before the honey sets.

And second, grease with food oil — olive or sunflower — before putting it away. That oil leaves the stator lubricated, which is what keeps the first start of the next day from being a dry start.
